If you’re looking for a gentler and less painful alternative to waxing, we’ve got just the thing. Your first appointment may be a bit more uncomfortable, but rest assured that subsequent treatments will offer you a much better experience.
Here’s what you need to know about your first sugaring appointment:
The Prep
Two days before your appointment, you’ll want to exfoliate the area you’re sugaring and keep your hair at a length of about ¼ of an inch long. You’ll also want to try to wear clothing that won’t rub against the sugared area to avoid any discomfort after your appointment.
The Appointment
Once you arrive at your appointment, the esthetician will invite you into the room where you can change and cover yourself with a towel. When applying sugar, your esthetician will first apply a powder, like talcum, to absorb the natural oils on your skin and to help the hair separate from the skin. The sugar is then laid on top of the skin where it’s quickly pulled away after it’s adhered properly.
The (Lack Of) Pain
While there is some pain and discomfort, we can assure you it won’t compare to the level of pain you’d experience when waxing. Body sugar is also much better for people with sensitive skin because it won’t cause the same level of inflammation that you might feel after a wax. Your first appointment will be the most painful, especially if you’re a long-time shaver. The good news is this discomfort goes away after a few treatments as your hair thins.
The Aftercare
After your sugaring, your skin might look red and feel sensitive for a few hours. You can use a cold compress to reduce this discomfort, holding it to the area for about two minutes at a time. For 24 hours after your appointment, avoid sun tanning, scented soaps, exfoliating, and strenuous exercise. Start exfoliating the skin 2 days after the sugaring treatment and continue to do so every 2-3 days. You can use a bristle body brush or nylon glove and move in a circular motion. Of course, you’ll want to moisturize your skin frequently to help it look its best!
Since this was your first sugar, it’s possible not all the hair was removed, but please don’t shave! If you’re going to get sugared, keep it up. You’ll need to be sugared 3 to 4 times (every 2-4 weeks) because your hair grows in cycles. Once you’ve made it through all the growth cycles, the pain will lessen significantly and your results will last much longer.
